It was announced at the weekend that
Zhang Yimou, director of
Raise The Red Lantern,
Hero and
House Of Flying Daggers (and the less-hyped but truly beautiful
The Road Home), will oversee
the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Can we expect to see medals awarded for the bamboo pole vault, double-knife-throwing, or pinging beans at drums?

All in a kind of winsome slow-motion, of course. I like the idea of the closing ceremony opening in autumn and closing, half an hour later, in the winter.
Or, of course, just have Zhang Ziyi demonstrating how to make synchronised swimming a bit more interesting.
