My grandfather was a respectable member of the bourgeoisie who ran his own drapery shop and played bowls. I think he may even have been a Freemason. And he read the News of the World, because the sports reporting was good, and because “we need to know these things are going on in the world.”
I don’t think he would have felt the need to know these things.
If the News of the World, as has been suggested, is replaced by a Sunday edition of The Sun, I make one suggestion: that Rebekah Brooks should make the tea. And that she never be permitted to take a holiday.

One of my colleagues (who is Polish and feels more objective about all this) remarked "Why do people read these papers? Where do they think they get these stories from? They should just stop buying and reading them."
Amen to that . Everyone is demonising Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch but people are happy to lap it up. Immediately on Liberal Conspiracy the 'leaked' audio appeared of the meeting at the News of the World - doesn't this strike people as ironic? We're all horrible, voyeuristic nosey & prurient and all complicit in this...
I have never read the News of the World and (as far as I know) I've never appeared in it. It's been a close-run thing at times though.
I'm considering this the second in a trilogy of innuendo-laden single-word blog post titles.

Ugh - don't think I'd fancy drinking that tea. I'm with Annie - don't buy it and don't advertise in it - or in other words - don't fund it. And that's applies to today's grand hurrah and whatever fills the gap.
It's a tough one, Annie. When the whole story becomes a legitimate area of public interest, should we avoid reading the offending papers, so as not to give them legitimacy, but remain uninformed about what's happening?
