The world's a stage

JG Ballard appears to be still firing on all cylinders:

Today only bad actors can lead a nation, as Reagan and Blair showed. Poor Gordon Brown needs six months at Rada and a tryout at the Old Vic.

I absolutely don't understand that at all dear chap. One started out as an actor and ended up a politician the other a politician and ended up an actor (we met very briefly at the Regent in Beijing recently - very charming and earnest)

As for RADA and the Old Vic. Shouldn't the references be Fame and The Guilhall or something?

Its probably me being stupid isn't it? Go on. Show me up.

Old Vic?

Queen Vic more like....

Reagan's professional background may be a red herring here, Charles. I think what JGB is identifying is Reagan's and Blair's aptitude as media performers, and their ability to personify the aspirations of the electorate.

Doppelganger: Oh don't. I bet EastEnders is one of the shows that Brown's spinners have told him to pretend to watch. Hey, Dot MBE, though!

JG used to drink a bottle of Scotch a day. Perhaps if Brown did likewise he might cheer up a bit and do stand up.

Ballard is bang on as always, from The Drowned World through High Rise and Kingdom Come, he knows what's what. Actually read Crash a few months back and despite having been exposed to a huge amount of muck and filth during my life I still found it quite shocking. (Muck and filth = I once read a copy of the Sun on the Brighton to London train).

Blair's number was up after that Catherine Tate bit on Comic Relief - never ever demonstrate how good an actor you are if you want people to think you're sincere.

I saw this. Hurrah for JG!

But I'd be even more scared of Brown's big clunking fist then, Garfer.

Herge: I keep expecting him to show up on Dr Who. Who's playing Davros?

Billy: as I said the last time I saw Ian Dury play, if that's terminal illness, I'd like a piece.
