The Piper

I'm filled with self-loathing. I have no sense of proportion, no sense of the meaning of grief. At least 100 people have been murdered in a series of bomb attacks in Mumbai. And what's really upsetting me is that bloody Syd Barrett's died.

Ooh, when I was a teenager I really fancied a lad who had that very picture on his wall.

That's a great picture. It's very sad news. I don't know early Pink Floyd very well, but Syd Barrett's always been a cult icon round these parts, the poor man.

Nice turn of phrase in the Guardian obituary; Syd's acolytes maintained their romantic image of him "in the teeth of dull truth".

i'm just glad i got to read the phrase "when i was a teenager i really fancied a lad" - for some reason it makes me happy.

To be honest, I'd be more gutted if Syd Little was to die. Sold out Blackpool many times over, never took drugs, cut his toenails.

Living in Cambridge for the last, erm... nine-ish years, I always liked the idea that I could bump into Syd at any moment, perhaps daily, and most likely be none the wiser. It seems strange that now I won't. Even though I wouldn't have had a clue if I had. Still...
