i was GOING to write about music plagiarism in my blog, but now if i do, you will accuse me of plagiarism.
and there was this song i was GOING to write, called "smog" but Thom Yorke wrote the identical one, but he called it "fog" and now i can't even write that song.
damn, i'm plagiarizing ahead of everyone else.
(and if you get this comment twice, then i have plagiarized myself.)
The apotheosis of plagiarism cases has to be the one brought against John Fogerty. He was sued by his old label in 1994 for plagiarising himself. [http://sandefur.typepad.com/freespace/2004/08/selfplagiarism.html]
(Would have posted on CiF but it brings me out in a rash...)
Smog is different from fog, Amy. More urban and nasty. Go for it.
I had that one in mind, Shane, as well as Elastica tussling with the Stranglers and Wire, Led Zep pissing on the corpses of a hundred dead bluesmen, the Ghostbusters saga, HDH and 'The Same Old Song', whichever Lloyd Cole song it is that rips off Iggy Pop...
Went barmy years ago, 9/10. What rock were you hiding under?
Apropos of something else entirely, I meant to say on my blog that it was none other than your analysis of 'Climbing Up The Walls' that made me go all jumpy yesterday and start seeing apparitions.
I've never heard the song, but your chapter on it, which I read on Sunday night, gave me the (ahem) creeps.
Ooh, thanks, P, that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me in days. You should have seen the original version, with the bits about strange noises in the tamarind trees at three in the morning (axed by the editor for being a wee bit too self-indulgent).
I'm forever hearing songs that contain phrases (musical or words) that resemble other songs. Sometimes it is blatant copying. Sometimes its the problem of being able to arrange words and notes in only so many ways otherwise they become discordant and/or nonsense (or in the case of punk they become melodious).
Can't remember who said it, but there's a quote to that effect that all the music in the world has already been written.
As for plagiarising oneself, I licensed content from my website under the GFDL, displayed notices to that effect, wrote to Wikipedia to that effect and one of my Wiki pages *still* got removed for violating my own copyright!

Sympathy for Avril Lavigne?
What next? Admiration for Paris Hilton or the feeling that Posh & Becks are really misunderstood fashion icons of the modern age?
AND someone from the British Isles won a final at Wimbledon. Has the whole world gone mad!?

Have updated post accordingly...
