One thing and another

1. A bit of utopian what-iffery about education policy at CiF.

2. There's one thing I still don't understand. If that watch contained all the essential nuts and bolts of the Doctor's personality, and represented the only chance that he might get his real self back, might it not have been a sensible idea to entrust it to Martha, who knew how important it was, rather than leaving it with the oblivious 'John Smith', who just bunged it on the mantelpiece and didn't even notice it had been swiped by the blond kid? Or am I missing something?

That was my thought too - about the watch. But I suppose it might not have been much a story otherwise. You haven't missed anything.

On the main page you're just below Fidel Castro. He might have more comments, but his Radiohead book is probably still years away from being published.

Oh well, maybe it'll all be explained in part two, Hooligan.

As I'm sure you know, Joel, Fidel prefers the Manics. Caption: "Thanks for coming, lads, but to be honest I rather went off you after the mad skinny one jumped in the river."

I think you missed that the watch had a "perception filter" on it and was ignored by everyone for ages until a weirdo psychic kid found it. That's not easy to plan for!

1 I like your education article a lot. The emphasis on exams, tests & statistics is anti-education, & a dopey, lazy, ignorant, short-sighted way of attempting to 'raise standards', IMHO.

2. No idea what this is all about. Doctor Who?

Martha, a housemaid might get arrested for being in possession of a posh watch that she had surely stolen. Besides, without the kiddie thief, where would the drama be?

Marcus, I get the feeling that the perception filter rivals the sonic screwdriver as the most useful device to resolve plotting difficulties.

Thank you, Annie. Always nice to have appreciation from someone at the chalkface. And sorry about the DW ref.

Surely she could have stashed it in her bloomers, llewtrah? (Were they hers we saw hanging up when she was making tea, or did they belong to her lardy friend who went alien/mental?)

Interesting article but I was just wondering how one would gauge potential. I imagine that's quite tricky.

Tricky - but, as I say, that's what university admissions tutors and job interviewers have to do all the time. It can't be an exact science, and mistakes will be made, but can it be any more inexact than exams?

If policy was changed to make primary education the most important part of education and seven years were spent investing heavily in children, instead of waiting till they were older or got to higher education, it might be workable and beneficial.

If Martha had taken the watch and locked it in the Tardis as soon as they got there, they wouldn't be in the mess they're in now. Tch.
