Spod corner

Blogger seems to be suggesting, with all the elegant subtlety of a big wet snog from an oiled, naked and up-for-it John McCririck, that it might be in my best interests to shift my ass to the new version. Should I? Pros and cons, please, from anybody who's done it, or has made a conscious decision not to.

Sorry about the McCririck bit.

it's supposed to be better and more stable.

make backups of your existing template and upgrade. i don't think it'll be much of a problem for you.

i'm not upgrading yet since i've customised my template to whole new level and it will screw things up if i upgrade now, so i'm waiting until i'm very familiar with the new one (i'm learning as it is in sandbox mode).

shoot me mail if you need any help.

Hi Tim

If you're using a blogging application (I use MarsEdit), you probably should check that it supports the new blogger system. Mine, for example, doesn't...

Best

I'm not moving until they send a heavy squad of propellerheads round to force me out of my home, and even then I'll have handcuffed myself to a steel ring set into concrete and sunk into my template. I fear change.

But there will be a forced upgrade sooner or later, so we're all going to have to move sometime. Beta pros: you can label your posts and thus sort them into handy categores. Beta cons: the comments box leaves a stupid space before your name when you comment. GOD that winds me up. And I don't like the new 'publish' and 'review' comment buttons. And I don't like the tabbed archive thing in the right-hand navbar; it's messy. Messy. Ick.

Otherwise I expect I'll get used to it when I do move, and wonder why I didn't do it sooner.

That probably doesn't help, but I feel better.

Treespotter has the right idea I think - play about with the sandbox first, then decide.

i did switch and regret it a bit.

it is easier to change things like layout, font and colour; but there is less control over more technical things like links. i guess i'm no expert, but i don't understand the new code or how to manipulate it as well as before.

i use safari and some of the functions don't seem to work either (spell check) which did on the last one. boxes and tables are easy to create but sometimes annoying to put where you want it to go. the archiving feature is much better i think, as you get options on format and styles now.

and also, the change over is portrayed as an easy switch, but you'll probably need a few hours to sort it out to a reasonable standard.

I woke up in the night in a cold sweat with your graphic image of John McCririck.

Thank you TF.

I switched to Beta last week and the only difference I can see is having to keep logging in via Google account to post comments.

A quick traitorous outside comment. If you were ever to move altogether, to wordpress, for example, which I've done, it'll import pretty much your whole blog - posts, comments - from old blogger but it can't do so with beta.

Oh bib I didn't know that. Too late for me. I have to say when I moved I didn't notice much difference apart from it's easier to put links up.

That is sneaky, isn't it, Bib? God bless capitalism.

Thanks for your input, everyone. Since I have very few wiggly add-ons, it sounds as if there will be little aggravation if I change. Think I'll take Treespotter's advice and play in the sandbox, like Brian Wilson.

And sorry again for the tunmescent McCririck thing.

It's new, it's what all the young people are doing and it has the word "Beta" in it. Of course you fuckin shouldn't.

I'm linking you and there is absolutely nothing you or anyone else can do about it.

i started a new one in beta since i never yet received the option to migrate, and i do like it better. my favorite new things are no more "you must republish your entire blog just because you moved that comma" and no more 0%, 0%, 0%, 0% and it's lots easier to change stuff around which i do all the time because i have the attention span of a flea. i would like to import all my old pigeon weather stuff to my new 1040-a but have no idea how to do it or even if it's possible. that's what comes of being impatient i suppose.

Welcome, Kieran. I see your favourites list includes Godard, Camus and Leonard Cohen. Life and soul of the party, I'll bet.

Tom: Impatient, low attention span... have you tried Ritalin?

I think patroclus may be right. A forced upgrade is inevitable. Along with some kind of spammy stuff I expect. This free stuff was too good to last.

Party?
I don't know the meaning of the word.
